Torhout 250 years ago (heritage walk)

In 2026, it was 300 years since Count de Ferraris was born. About 250 years ago, his surveying team came to Torhout to see what our city looked like. They made a map of the then Zuidelijke Nederlanden. This map, the Ferraris map, still fascinates us today. This year, a guide is being published with walks that point to the surroundings of that time. Martine Vandecavey and Rik Deketelaere co-authored this guide with a Torhout walk. That walk is much longer and definitely recommended. The guide is expected in bookstores at the beginning of June. For the heritage walk that we are taking together, Martine and Rik are the perfect guides. They show us in the center of present-day Torhout what is on the map. We discover what can still be found after all this time. Hendrik Vandeginste provides background information on some places about what the centuries-old history is.
