Verdi’s monumental opera follows the tragic downfall of Otello, a successful general who is slowly consumed by jealousy and manipulation. Incited by the cunning Iago, he begins to doubt the fidelity of his wife Desdemona, with fatal consequences. One of today's most important dramatic tenors, Brian Jagde, performs the title role of what is often considered the ultimate Italian opera. Verdi’s monumental Shakespeare tragedy also brings together soprano Ailyn Pérez as Desdemona and baritone Artur Ruciński as the dark Iago. Michele Mariotti conducts the Met Orchestra and Chorus. The power of Otello lies not only in the great arias, but especially in the intense dramatic tension and the rich role of the orchestra. From the devastating storm scene at the beginning to the chilling finale, this opera belongs to Verdi’s most impressive masterpieces.
