Thematic Day In Memoriam Benjamin Britten: Seven Tears

In 1604, the English composer John Dowland published his collection Lachrimae. The first seven parts of this are inspired by the theme of 'tears' and all depart from the same motif. Benjamin Britten loved Dowland's music very much, which formed the direct impetus for his own Lachrymae from 1951. Ook Annelies Van Parys entered into a dialogue with Dowland. Especially for the Hathor Consort (five viola da gambas and lute), she wrote Six Interludes which reflect on Lachrimae, or Seven Tears and also weave them together into one organic whole.
