Nature walk: Exploring the Hazendal

Natuurgids Eloi takes you on a path to the beautiful Hazendal. Het Hazendal is a piece of the Sonian Forest wedged between the village center of Hoeilaart and the Groenendaal station. At the beginning of the 20th century, King Leopold II had a park area laid out there, where the well-to-do bourgeoisie from Brussels liked to walk and relax. The eight ponds laid out at the time – the so-called King's Ponds – still offer an excellent habitat for numerous plant and animal species, including rare dragonflies. Even the beaver has recently found its way there. In the spring, the forest floor colors white due to extensive carpets of wood anemones and other spring bloomers. In the autumn, you can enjoy the most beautiful autumn colors. Remnants of charcoal kilns and toponyms like Hazendal and Varkensgat testify to the historical activity in the Sonian Forest by, among others, Celts and medieval farmers. In the Hazendal, there is also a play forest, making it a child-friendly walk! Participation is free, but register in advance via toerisme@hoeilaart.be so that we can keep you informed of any changes.
