Royal Museum of Fine Arts Antwerp (KMSKA), Antwerp
One of the great sculptors of the 20th century, a surprisingly strong bond with our country and an exhibition in the magnificent KMSKA: an excellent opportunity to discover Ossip Zadkine up close.
Zadkine was born in 1888 in Vitebsk, in present-day Belarus, but built his artistic career mainly in Paris. With his expressive, often angular figures, he developed a very recognizable visual language. Belgium played a special role in his life and work: he stayed here regularly, exhibited here and maintained close contacts with Belgian artists, collectors and art lovers.
During the exhibition ‘Ossip Zadkine and Belgium’ we discover how that Belgian connection helped shape his artistic journey. We get to know his sculptures and drawings while simultaneously getting a nice picture of the art world in which he moved.
A guide takes us through the story behind the works and helps us look at details that we might otherwise walk past. With a maximum of 12 participants, the group is deliberately kept small, so there is plenty of room to quietly look, listen and ask questions. A special encounter with art and artist in one of the most beautiful museums in Antwerp.
