Soraya is 16, she creates beautiful drawings and sculptures, but above all she is determined to shape her own future. She has been trying to escape from Iran for five years, away from her marriage to a violent man, and flee to her mother in Austria. Over a period of five years, Soraya films herself, her escape attempts, and her art. A unique and layered (self-)portrait that rightfully won the prestigious ‘Best Film Award’ at IDFA.
Regisseur Mehrdad Oskouei weaves the sometimes confrontational footage filmed by Soraya herself with political news from Afghanistan – Soraya's country of origin – and her drawings and surreal animations. Soraya was actively involved in all facets of making this gorgeous documentary, making the film not only a layered portrait, but a vital lifeline for Soraya. Or as she describes it herself: “In the beginning, the camera was like a cold witness to me, but gradually it became a friend. A confidant that I badly needed.”
