WHEN A BATTLEFIELD BECOMES A NATURE RESERVE - ZILLEBEKE - 7 KM The war site Hill 60 (3 ha) was able to develop undisturbed for 118 years from a moonscape into a natural park landscape. On the other side of the deep railway cutting lies the Vierlingen domain, with its famous mine crater, beautifully developed forest, ponds, and heath fields. Further on, we explore the recently established grazing zone of the Palingbeek domain, where spontaneous nature development under extensive grazing management is given every opportunity. Finally, we get a taste of the Molenbos, which was the first to be replanted in the Ypres Salient after the war. A trip full of beautiful, varied nature where death and destruction reigned more than a century ago.
