The Witch of Almen

In 1472, one of the first victims of the witch hunts in the Netherlands was burned alive on the church square in Almen. Theatermakers Achterhoek created a theater performance about this unimaginable event. When Als Aleyda is picked up in her own home and dragged to a stuffy dungeon in Zutphen, she has no idea what the reason for her arrest is. Only when her daughter Greetje comes to visit her does it become clear: Aleyda, the headstrong woman who uses her powers and knowledge of medicinal herbs in her work as a midwife, is suspected of witchcraft. The witch burnings had a major influence on the development of our society and the position of women within it. Theatermakers Achterhoek searches for the light in this horrific story by mixing past and present. The local witch past of Laarne is also incorporated into the performance.
