Occasion: – 20 years of AFRACTIE – 10 years of BINETA’S ORPHANAGE —— On the occasion of 20 years of AFRACTIE we are screening the splendid Senegalese film 'BANEL & ADAMA' on October 5. But AFRACTIE is not the only anniversary we are celebrating that evening, because Pouponnière Sourire Bébé in Senegal is also turning 10 years old. What started in 2016 with four babies has meanwhile grown into an orphanage that has given 200 children a safe start in life. Bineta, the driving force behind that project (photo on the right), will come and tell the special story of her orphanage beforehand. And afterwards, with a free drink, you get the chance to personally meet her and chat about the film. —– Banel and Adama are two young people on the verge of adulthood in a remote village somewhere in northern Senegal. The two are complete opposites, yet the quiet, introverted Adama and the fiery, rebellious, and passionate Banel fall in love with each other. Adama is destined to become village chief, but chooses love for Banel and renounces his birthright. A choice that causes chaos and unrest in the village. And when the rain also fails to appear, the entire situation in the community becomes even more bitter… With her excellent debut 'BANEL & ADAMA', director Ramata-Toulaye Sy immediately puts herself on the map as the cinematic talent of African cinema. This modern Senegalese version of Romeo and Juliet is not only visually stunning, but can also boast an excellent script and an excellent cast of (non-professional) actors. Vooral Khady Mané excels in her role as the 'Julia' on duty: not a submissive figure who passively undergoes her fate, but a resolute character who seeks her own path. This magnificent film premiered in the official competition of the Filmfestival van Cannes, as one of the nominees for the Gouden Palm.
