Gustave Van de Woestyne and Anto Carte at the Van Buuren Museum

From May 22 to September 27, 2026, the Museum & Jardins van Buuren presents Interior Territories, an exhibition dedicated to Gustave van de Woestyne and Anto Carte, two major figures of 20th-century Belgian art.\n\nThrough a dialogue between their works, the exhibition explores common themes where introspection, nature and the rural world intersect. Both artists develop a deeply internalized vision of the human condition, marked by a particular attention to spirituality and the relationship to the land.\n\n"Gustave van de Woestyne was born in Ghent in 1881. Anto Carte was born in Mons in 1886. One grew up in Flanders, the other in Hainaut. The history of Belgian art has long placed them in separate families — Van de Woestyne on the side of the Sint-Martens-Latem school, Carte on the side of the Nervia group.\n\nWhat they share is a way of seeing the sacred in the simplest everyday life. A sower throwing his grain. A shepherd staring at the horizon. A mother holding her child. For both artists, these ordinary gestures carry a universal dimension. But their sensibilities are not identical. Chez Van de Woestyne, the figures seem to want to rise: the golden background, the hieratic pose pull them upward. Chez Carte, they remain anchored in the flesh, in the heaviness of the world. One sublimes. The other anchors. Together, they express something complete."\n\nWith this exhibition, new works join the collection of the museum Van Buuren, which houses the largest collection of artworks by Gustave Van de Woestyne (1881–1947).\n\nAfter the visit, you can stroll freely through the garden.\n\nThe price of the guided tour does not include the museum admission ticket, which must be paid on-site (preferential price of €15/ticket instead of €18, museum pass and Brussels card accepted).\n\nThe exhibition ends on 27/09/2026.
