“La couleur de l’ombre” is the second album by duo Coordonné, released by record label Etcétéra. In this program, mezzo-soprano Anna Nuytten and lutenist Thomas Langlois discover the enormous richness of the French early Baroque “Airs de cour”. These songs, which were written in the context of the French court, are certainly not as high-flown as the name of the genre suggests. They often have a very strong connection with the most diverse human emotions: passion, pain, rejection, sadness, excitement, frustration, anger, and so much more. The human being is sketched from his most courtly to his most vulgar, and both the most innocent and the darkest sides of the soul are addressed. In addition, duo Coordonné digs deeper into the oeuvre of the modern chansonnière, Barbara. Although her songs are autobiographical, Barbara succeeds in transforming the most difficult and darkest periods of her life through music into poetry with an immense color palette. These two styles are separated in time by several centuries, but connect with each other through language, theme, instrumentation, atmosphere, and harmony. A letter from Barbara, read by Anna, forms the common thread throughout this program.
