HOWL BABY HOWL
It was the girl from across the street about whom we kept hearing the same story. How she had arrived as a baby in a wicker basket and was raised by wolves. We didn't know much more about her. She always walked around with a homemade butterfly net. Every pink, fluttering butterfly she caught, she put in her hood. And when we asked why, she explained: ‘The fluttering wings muffle the calling.’ We nodded and asked no further questions. One evening she stood all alone on the hill next to our house. She sang a song and took off her hood. Butterflies poured out and the sky turned pink. We watched.
In Howl Baby Howl Ika and Judith depict with sculptures and video projections a world in which children grow up under circumstances that are simultaneously loving and dangerous. In a sensory total experience, the makers weave the myth of Romulus and Remus with the reality of KOPP children - children who balance between being a child and playing parent, between receiving care and giving care.
I NEVER LIE
If she had been born 100 years ago, Agnese Valmaggia would not have been a drummer. Why? A female drummer, in fascist Italy? Unthinkable.
In her solo performance I never lie, music, image, and storytelling come together to question social norms and stereotypes. The drum kit forms the beating heart of the performance and is surrounded by electronics, samples, and impressive video projections, all controlled live. In this way, she creates complete multisensory worlds with nothing more than her drums, her laptop, and her vision.
