During his festive inauguration as chief conductor of the Antwerp Symphony Orchestra, Marc Albrecht makes a statement of size. Together with the choir and children’s choir of Opera Ballet Vlaanderen, he performs Mahlers Derde symphony, a monumental masterpiece that begins tragically with the chaos of creation and ends with the endless light of God. Along the way, Mahler explores the big questions about the destiny of man and the primal forces of nature. These are themes that are also close to Albrecht’s heart. At his debut with the Antwerp Symphony Orchestra in 2024, he conducted Also sprach Zarathustra van Richard Strauss, a work that – just like Mahlers Derde symphony – found its origin in the text of the same name by Friedrich Nietzsche.
