The Lives of Others

Das Leben der Anderen (2006) follows Stasi agent Gerd Wiesler in East Berlin (1984). He is tasked with wiretapping playwright Georg Dreymann and his girlfriend in the hope of being able to arrest them. Instead, Wiesler becomes deeply moved by their art and humanity, which leads to a moral transformation. The film was nominated for Best Foreign Language Film at the Golden Globes and won the Oscar for Best International Feature Film in 2007.
