Christoph Birkmann (1703-1771) studied theology, rhetoric, English, Italian, astronomy, and music. As an accomplished musician and student of Bach, he was also an excellent author of cantata texts. Although only three cantatas have been attributed to him with certainty so far, recent research shows that Bach consulted Birkmann much more often. In this program, BachPlus brings cantatas by Bach on texts by this remarkable ‘homo universalis’: Bleib bei uns, denn es will Abend werden (BWV 6) and Was Gott tut das ist wohlgetan (BWV 98).
