Transporc: a look at entrepreneurship and informal economy in West Africa

The documentary Transporc van Halewijn Timmerman, alumnus of our Advanced Bachelor Global Citizenship and Development, follows Thérèse, an enterprising woman who transports pigs between Senegal and Guinea-Bissau. What looks on paper like a small trade route provides a special and unfiltered insight into how economy and entrepreneurship work in practice in West Africa. The film shows that what is often described as the 'informal economy' actually relies on trust, experience, perseverance, networks, and entrepreneurship. At the same time, Transporc depicts the sometimes harsh reality of farmers and entrepreneurs, who daily find their way within complex economic and cross-border systems. After the screening, VRT journalist Stijn Vercruysse takes us into The Century of Africa, with special attention to the role of the informal economy and entrepreneurship on the African continent.
