The Fools of Will Theatre

The Fools of Will

Sat, 20 Jun 2026 · 18:00
Le Marni, Brussels
At the heart of William Shakespeare's work, the Fools occupy a singular place, on the edge of laughter and vertigo. Buffoons, clowns, fools or disguised sages, they thwart hierarchies, displace certainties and introduce, under the guise of play, a word of radical lucidity. Through their voices, theater becomes a space of tipping. The grotesque rubs shoulders with the tragic, insolence reveals the intimate and apparent lightness opens abysses of thought. Authorized to say everything because they are supposedly "fools", they are often the only ones to see clearly and to dare to name what others keep silent. Les Fools have this singular way of inhabiting language, of disturbing evidence, of opening breaches in reality. The creative work led by the students of Master du Conservatoire Royal de Bruxelles is part of this fertile tension. It explores the multiple faces of these figures: their freedom of tone, their relationship to power, their ability to navigate between mask and truth. Scenes from the repertoire become points of support, materials for transformation. Shakespeare's words resonate with those of Dieudonné Niangouna, Vincent Macaigne, as well as with the performers' own writings. What is being built here is less about narrative than about crossing. It is a fragmentary, porous space, where the question "what does it mean to play the fool today?" is constantly replayed. Is it hiding, revealing, resisting, surviving? In a world where discourses freeze and roles are assigned, the Fools remind us that theater is first and foremost a place of trouble, a space where speech derails to better reach its accuracy. A truth that does not impose itself, but which surfaces, fragile, unstable, necessary.
