Especially for Open Monumentendag, the doors of this stately home at the Zuidpark open. A unique opportunity! This stately mansion with carriage house and courtyard was built in 1864. Originally, the noble family De Ruysschere lived here. In 1904, Ernest Maeterlinck, notary and brother of Nobelprijswinnaar Maurice Maeterlinck, bought the house. It is one of the last witnesses of the once-rich development of mansions along the Zuidpark. After more than 150 years, the grandeur of the mansion has now been restored. A thoughtful restoration by owner-architect Geert Alaerts brought the original beauty back to life. Admire the salons with original cast-iron radiators, parquet floors, stucco, and marble mantels. The public voted the restoration the winner of the Gentse Monumentenprijs 2025. Practical info: Without a reservation, you cannot visit the house. Accessibility: During the tour, many stairs are taken. The house is unfortunately not accessible to wheelchair users.
