Berlinde Deman is the permanent tubist of Flat Earth Society Orchestra. In addition, she appears in numerous bands and projects from jazz, theater, and the classical world: from Dave Douglas and Dick van der Harst to ChampdAction, Spectra, and Post uit Hessdalen to Jef Neve, Spinvis, and Dez Mona. After a years-long fascination for the predecessor of the tuba, Deman purchases the serpent, a rare instrument from the 16th century. On this, Deman explores the boundaries of slowness with the serpent and loops and electronics; far away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life: “There is so much noise pollution around us. We live with a sea of noise. I have an instrument in my hands from a time without electricity, when the volume of the world was, in my opinion, many decibels lower.
