Wouter Bulckaert plays songs by John Cale and The Velvet Underground with Ben De Troyer and Brecht Peleman, and tells John Cales's musical story in passing. The classically trained Welshman John Cale founded New York The Velvet Underground together with Lou Reed. During his solo career, he continues to tirelessly experiment and explore, from pop to punk, from trip-hop to avant-garde. In between, he produces iconic records like Patti Smiths Horses . In the musical performance ‘John Cale. Underdog in the Underground’, Wouter Bulckaert plays a cross-section of Cale's repertoire with his band The Velvet Underdogs (Ben De Troyer, vocals; Brecht Peleman, guitar; Wouter Bulckaert, piano). In between, he tells how the enigmatic John Cale remains an elusive outsider: an alien in rock 'n' roll, a misfit in classical music, and an underdog in the underground. The performance is visually finished with drawings by the New Yorkse illustrator Edward Hall, from Wouter Bulckaerts's new book ‘John Cale. Underdog in the underground’ (Noordboek).
