GLoW Collective - To the Good Life (Festival of Flanders)

We know the chaconne today as a stately baroque dance with a repeating bass line. Once, however, it was something completely different: a fast, decidedly worldly dance that arose from the cross-pollination of different cultures in the overseas Spanish territories. The lyrics were often playful or downright spicy, the music rhythmic and energetic. Despite strict bans, these dances still found their way into churches and monasteries. An example of this is ‘A la Vida Bona’ by the Catalan composer Juan Arañés, a song that teems with colorful scenes that seem to come straight out of a painting by Jeroen Bosch. GLoW Collective uses this musical form as a starting point for a journey through various cultures and styles. In doing so, they ask one central question: what does it mean for your identity when parts of your culture are forbidden, forgotten, or appropriated? The opening act is provided by Kunstacademie Eeklo.
