Pelléas & Mélisande is a dark fairy tale for adults, in which forbidden love, jealousy, and melancholy predominate. Dimitri Leue retranslated the original text of Maurice Maeterlincks masterpiece about forbidden desires and human folly, stripping the text of its dust and putting it in a modern jacket.
In an atmospheric forest, Frank Focketyn and Rashif El Kaoui transform into rival courtiers fighting for love. They circle each other like rutting deer, trapped in a superlative of love. After all, is there a greater fool than the person in love?
The two top actors tumble lightly through this courtly story, while the threat is constantly lurking.
While the actors treat the audience to a range of raw emotions, the music forms the heartbeat of the performance. The compositions that once inspired greats like Sibelius, Fauré, and Debussy flow together here in a jazzy sound and feel arrangement by Antoon Offeciers. The result is a sensual performance in which the boundary between love and madness blurs.
Let yourself be carried away to a world full of poetic refinement and courtly art of seduction.
Did-you-know: the company resides in De Meermin to create and rehearse this piece in peace. This is how we profile ourselves as a breeding ground for new projects, something we only want to stimulate.
