Berlinde Deman ‘What silence carries.’ Berlinde Deman is what we call a well-known name within the music world. She is the permanent tubist of Flat Earth Society Orchestra, appears in projects and bands like Spinvis, Dave Douglas, DezMona, and Jef Neve, and did residencies in Sweden, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, and Belgium. After a years-long fascination with the predecessor of the tuba, she acquires the serpent. A rare instrument from the 16th century that produces sounds full of melancholy and with which she explores the boundaries of slowness solo, far away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. During the shared listening experience ‘What silence carries’, silence is central. Not as emptiness, but as space: full of possibilities, breath, and expectation. The music comes from the serpent with its earthy sound, human, close to the breath. In between the music, Berlinde talks. About her own path as a musician.
