In the remote village of Hope, near the heavily guarded Korean Demilitarized Zone (DMZ), chaos breaks out when a mysterious discovery is made on the edge of the remote port town. Soon the inhabitants find themselves in a desperate struggle for survival against something they have never encountered before. Commentaar Tien years after The Wailing — one of the biggest horror hits ever in South Korea — Na Hong-jin is back, this time with a completely different kind of film. No psychological horror this time, but a straight-up sci-fi/action epic with spooky elements, spectacular set pieces, a bombastic atmosphere, and a whole load of camp. One that, with its ironic humor and over-the-top approach, will tickle your funny bone just as much as it will make you shudder. With its budget of 70 million dollars, it is by some margin the most expensive South Korean film ever made. The film premiered a bit like a fish out of water — but no less deservedly so — in Cannes, where it competed for the Palme d'Or. Press “Na Hong-jin's savage and smart monster movie is a must-see” — Slate Magazine
