Met are 68 string quartets, Joseph Haydn finally broke with the hierarchical role division from the Baroque. He considered the four instruments as equal voices and placed them within a clear four-part form. The genre gained popularity with, among others, Beethoven, Bartók, and Ryelandt. Even today, the string quartet has not yet played its last note: Philip Glass, Caroline Shaw and Jürg Frey explore the boundaries of the genre, without losing the connection with the past.
With various listening examples, Guillaume De Grieve guides you through the history and repertoire of string quartets, from past to present.
This lecture is the perfect preparation for the various concerts with string quartets that can be heard in the Noordrand region, but is also fine to follow on its own.
