How do Tapta and Judd change our definition of sculpture? What do we expect from a sculpture: a story, a figure, a meaning that we recognize? For centuries, that meaning often lay in what was depicted and in the shared stories of mythology, religion, or history. Over the course of the 19th century, radical social and technological changes brought about major shifts in art. The rise of photography is one of the most important developments in this regard. The image no longer solely has to imitate visible reality, allowing artists to gradually begin exploring other paths: those of experience, space, material, and a more personal way of looking. In this guided tour, we examine how Tapta and Judd push that shift even further. Their abstract work does not refer to a story, but invites a direct encounter between object, space, and spectator. Thus, sculpture becomes less a representation of something, and more an experience in itself. The central question then becomes: how do Tapta and Judd change our definition of sculpture?
