Sonata in A minor “Arpeggione”, D. 821 Composed in 1824, the Sonata in A minor, D. 821 is one of the rare works written for the arpeggione, a string instrument that has since disappeared. Between singing lyricism and more dramatic impulses, Schubert deploys a style of great melodic flexibility, supported by a close dialogue with the piano. Quickly transcribed for other instruments, notably the cello, this sonata has found a lasting place in the repertoire, where it reveals all the expressive richness and melodic invention of the composer.
