Modern Nature

Het Britse Modern Nature makes folky krautrock, with a penchant for pastoral themes and a philosophical basis of collectivism and anti-capitalism. Songwriter and singer Jack Cooper (ex- Ultimate Painting) is the greatest creative force behind the group, and works on his music in the seclusion of his home in the British countryside. Since the debut album How to Live (Bella Union - 2019) , Modern Nature has been a unique force in British indie, one that is difficult to categorize correctly but hits the mark immediately. Cooper and his loose band work with minimalist compositions, built from subtle rhythmic patterns and circular, repetitive riffs. As a finish, they add elements from jazz, post-rock, and psychedelia, which makes the whole thing sound as if Talk Talk, Robert Wyatt, Can, and Yo La Tengo started jamming together in the rolling hills of the Cotswolds. For the most recent album by Modern Nature , The Heat Warps (2025), Cooper brought in Tara Cunningham as a new band member, with the goal of working with two guitarists around the rhythm section consisting of Jim Wallis (drums) and Jeff Tobias (bass). The result is a new shift in the sound of Modern Nature to a slightly more open sound.
