Blik Historik: Where past and present meet The garden district in Aarschot – 100 years of social housing How do we ensure affordable, humane housing for everyone? In Aarschot tells a big story in a modest neighborhood. One hundred years ago, the Society for Goedkope Woningen was founded, and as early as 1923, the city got its first social housing district in the Gasthuisbeemden. What started as an answer to housing shortages grew into a living overview of how ideas about social housing changed over time. During this walk, we follow the development of the garden district through different periods: the difficult years of economic crisis, the reconstruction after the Eerste Wereldoorlog, and the optimistic ‘golden sixties’.
