Cabaret, men who worship her, success … But it doesn't last. María ends up on the margins and dies young. And then? She wanders the city streets as a ghost. And like in a Bible story, she becomes miraculously pregnant …\n\nAstor Piazzolla, master of the bandoneon, breathes new life into Argentine tango from the 60s onwards. The tango becomes jazzy, steeped in classical music. Zijn Tango Nuevo is given a voice here in the surrealist poetry of Horacio Ferrer. María's story feels simultaneously modern, feminine, and almost sacred, like a contemporary passion story.\n\nThe staging by Giulia Giammona breaks with clichés. She lets us rediscover the feminine surrealist texts and sharpens the codes of tango. She shows how women are often idealized and exposes the mechanism behind it.\n\nBased on a libretto (1968) by Horacio Ferrer Muzikale; directed by Nicolas Agullo Gezongen; spoken in Spanish and French, subtitled in French and English.
