We meet the Britse Theo and Ivy while their seemingly perfect marriage falls apart. Their marital crisis arises when the classic and conservative role patterns are turned upside down by a twist of fate. Theo is a successful architect who ends up staying at home, while mother Ivy develops into a celebrated chef with her own restaurant chain after a great review of her cooking in her first beach shack ‘We’ve Got Crabs’. The birth of the businesswoman does something to her husband's already dented ego, and the new relationships fundamentally change the family dynamic. The film is a contemporary version of Warren Adlers's iconic book ‘The War of the Roses’, filmed in 1989 with Kathleen Turner and Michael Douglas in the lead roles. Scenarist Tony McNamara (previously responsible for ‘The Favourite’ and ‘Poor Things’) does not shy away from absurdity and transforms the modern couple into a wild and untamable duo. Benedict Cumberbatch knows exactly how to portray a man who tries his best to be a good, progressive househusband, while feeling belittled in the meantime. Together with a rock-solid Olivia Colman, they shine in their daring game and effortlessly drag you into their marital dynamic with razor-sharp glances, including the cool ping-pong dialogues. They convincingly bring the familiarity of a long-term relationship to life, but also show how the love has drained away.
