Festival Oost-Flanders: Deurle. Annual classical concert organized by the Feestcomite van Deurle. In this program, the young, virtuoso Belgian pianist Alexander Declercq puts the work of two other keyboard lions on the music stand. Beethoven and Brahms form two imposing milestones in the history of the piano repertoire. Van Beethoven two sonatas sound: the early Sonata no. 4 dates from 1796 and is one of his longest. He published the work independently and not as part of a set of multiple sonatas, as was customary. Two years later he wrote Sonata no. 8 as the third and last of a bundle of three. It went down in history as the ‘Pathétique’ and heralds a new era. Here Beethoven seems to have found his own voice. Between the two sonatas, Alexander plays the six heartfelt keyboard pieces that Brahms, almost a hundred years later, dedicated to his close friend Clara Schumann. It is the last music the old master wrote for piano.
