An acoustic pearl

In 1847, Mrs. Van Celst begins her neo-Gothic chapel and contacts the renowned Brussels organ builder Merklin. His organ is a perfect soundboard in the intimate chapel. Today, many musicians appreciate the acoustics of the chapel. Het Merklin-organ has been preserved intact except for the console: the entire set of pipes is still original. Merklin takes the intimacy of the chapel into account. The sharp and loud registers are omitted without sacrificing clarity. In 2010, the organ is restored. You can experience the unique sound yourself: Henri Cosemans will play the organ and provide the necessary explanation about the maker, the operation, and the composition of the organ. The exceptional acoustics still inspire musicians today. Astrid Mertens, Magna Cum Laude master at the Antwerp conservatory, demonstrates on Open Monumentendag exceptionally on classical guitar. Practical info: Between 11:00 AM and 5:00 PM, the organ will be played continuously. Astrid Mertens plays a short set at 2:00 PM and at 4:00 PM. Make sure you are in the chapel in time for this because the door closes during the performance. You cannot reserve for this activity.
