Marjane, an intelligent and outspoken 9-year-old girl grows up in Iran during the Islamic revolution. Suddenly she has to wear a headscarf and almost everything that is fun is forbidden. Thousands of people are locked up, but Marjane is often too smart for the 'social guards'. She even discovers punk music, ABBA, and Iron Maiden.
