Marjane, an intelligent and outspoken 9-year-old girl grows up in Iran during the Islamic revolution. Suddenly she has to wear a headscarf and almost everything that is fun is forbidden. Thousands of people are locked up, but Marjane is often too smart for the 'social guards'. She even discovers punk music, ABBA, and Iron Maiden. But when her uncle is executed without pardon and Iraq throws bombs on Tehran, the daily fear becomes clearly palpable. Her parents worry about Marjane’s safety. Her big mouth could get her into trouble. When Commentaar Toen Marjane Satrapi published the first part of the autobiographical graphic novel Persepolis in 2000, she could never have suspected that the book would become such a milestone. Millions of copies were sold worldwide and when the comic was adapted into an animated film in 2007, it was awarded the jury prize in Cannes and an Oscar nomination. A unique, powerful, extremely charming animated film about the search for identity in a multicultural world, nuanced and covered with loving humor and an irresistible charm. In honor of the recently deceased Marjane Satrapi, now to be admired again on the big screen! Press "Whoever wants to see a sublime cartoon again, can rush to 'Persepolis'." - Humo "Besides a sharp critical satire, Persepolis is above all a humorous account of a girl growing up and becoming an adult in rough times.” - Filmtotaal
