Dragonfly walk in Heistergem

Walk along with our guide Jan through the beautiful Heistergem retention basin, a hidden gem on the border area of Lebbeke, Buggenhout and Opwijk. During this summery nature walk, we explore the unique landscape of the flood area, where water and nature live together. In June, dragonflies are at their most beautiful: colourful, graceful and fascinating. We go in search of these flying jewels along ponds, ditches and marshy grasslands. Along the way, you will discover how dragonflies live, what their role is in nature, and how you can recognise them yourself. Dragonflies are among the oldest insects, but their acrobatic flying skills are pure poetry in motion. Did you know that some dragonflies can mate in the air? Or that their larvae live underwater for years as little predatory monsters, complete with extendable lower jaws?   What to bring Walking shoes or boots, binoculars if possible. Water (to quench thirst), protection against sun, mosquitoes and horseflies. For whom? For everyone with a heart for nature. Unfortunately, the route is not suitable for wheelchair users, as we also walk a bit through meadows and places where sheep and goats graze. In case of rain, the walk will not take place.
