The municipality of Sint-Gillis-Waas is organizing ‘De Grote Schoonmaak’ at the Meerdonk cemetery on the morning of October 17th, together with Erfpunt and the Monument Watch of the province of East Flanders. This activity is part of the 'maintenance week'. Interested citizens will learn from the experts of the monument watch between 10 AM and 12 PM how to professionally clean a grave without causing damage to the grave itself or the living environment. Meanwhile, employees of the municipality and the local history society will be working on a number of valuable heritage graves.\n\nVisitors will also receive information about the history of the cemeteries of Meerdonk. The eye-catcher at the cemetery is the recently restored monumental cross at the grave of G.A. Peeters. During ‘De Grote Schoonmaak’, we will provide historical information about the life of this important Meerdonk resident.\n\nParticipation is free and prior registration is not necessary. It is recommended to bring the necessary cleaning materials yourself: a bucket, PH-neutral soap (e.g., baby shampoo), a wooden or plastic scraper, and brushes of different hardness.
