De Aalsterse priest Adolf Daens has the bad reputation of constantly clashing with everyone. After a run-in with the bishop, he temporarily moves in with his brother Pieter, who has a printing shop in Aalst. Adolf is confronted with the harrowing living conditions of the workers in the textile industry: low wages, child labor, famine, poverty. The rise of socialism makes the Catholic and liberal government nervous. When the workers revolt, Daens openly takes their side... ‘Daens’, the first Flemish film to be nominated for the Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film, still stands like a house almost 35 years after its release and returns to the big screen in a restored version.
