The Seventh Seal

After a ten-year crusade in the Heilige Land full of hardship and disappointment, knight Antonius Block and his faithful squire return to their homeland. In the Sweden of the 14th Century, the plague rages with all its might, misery and ignorance prevail, and countless alleged witches find death at the stake. In this distraught and horrific world, the knight comes face to face with Death on a deserted coast, who comes to take him. To gain time, the condemned man proposes a game of chess with the skinny man with the scythe. This yields the most famous sequence in Bergman's oeuvre. This is one of Bergman's most symbolic films.
