Public performance WHITE PRIVILEGE

The artist speaking: from construct to concept WHITE PRIVILEGE is a public performance by artist Eveline Bumba. During the intervention, 100 signed and numbered white paint cans are distributed, each printed with the words “WHITE PRIVILEGE” and accompanied by a certificate. The limited edition is a conscious artistic choice. Just as a limited edition creates exclusivity and scarcity in the art world, this edition refers to the unequal distribution of access, opportunities, and social space. Not everyone gets the same opportunities or the same starting position. The paint can thus becomes a symbol of a system in which advantages are distributed unequally. During the performance, Eveline Bumba wears a full white work outfit, printed with the words WHITE PRIVILEGE. The work clothing refers to the construction sector and symbolizes how social structures are built, maintained, and normalized. The artist takes on the role of a construction worker who does not erect buildings, but makes an invisible social system visible. After the performance, the worn work clothing is kept as a 'performance relic': a tangible remnant of the intervention that lives on as an archive and autonomous art object. Together, the work clothing, the paint cans, and the certificates form one installation, in which an everyday construction product changes into a sculptural object that asks questions about power, access, and the structures upon which our society is built.
