"Why have there been no great female artists?" This question, asked in 1971 by the American art historian Linda Nochlin, had a huge resonance in art history at the time. With this question, Nochlin denounces the lack of visibility and recognition that women face throughout art history, but also the obstacles they face during their careers. In 2026, interest in these issues remains relevant, and the number of female artists in Western museum collections, as well as their recognition in art history education, remains insufficient.
