Twelve-year-old Nanning lives with his family on the Duitse Waddeneilanden. The Nazi empire is the only thing the boy knows because his mother is a fervent Nazi supporter and his father an SS officer at the front. He himself is a member of the Hitler Youth. Als de Tweede Wereldoorlog almost over, his world collapses. A fascinating portrait of a society on its last legs, of a fascist dictatorship that is collapsing and shows how for some, life collapses with it, while for others it just continues and for a few it can finally begin. In observational long shots, Akin captures the island and its inhabitants, seen from the point of view of a twelve-year-old.
