Het Steentjesbos: from production forest to native forest: an unfinished story of many years

Het Steentjesbos was regularly a victim of deforestation and clear-cutting in the past. In 2011, Natuurpunt took over the management of the forest, and on October 31, 2014, the Steentjesbos became a real 'nature reserve'. Exotics are systematically removed and replaced by native species without affecting the forest character; biodiversity is increased by the creation of mantle and fringe vegetation between fields and forest. Through targeted purchases of satellite groves, wet meadows, and fields, the nature reserve was expanded to 72ha. The mix of deciduous and coniferous trees ensures a varied fauna . Perhaps you will see the beautiful goldcrest or the nuthatch along the coniferous groves. You can also observe the great spotted woodpecker, middle spotted woodpecker, lesser spotted woodpecker, green woodpecker, black woodpecker, treecreeper, buzzard, willow tit, sparrowhawk, and goshawk here. Roe deer, rabbit, hare, and common pipistrelle are regularly observed in the forest. Do you want to know more about nature management in this area and enjoy the beautiful result?
