Good Luck To You, Leo Grande / in original version with subtitles
At 63, Emma Thompson impresses in Good Luck to You, Leo Grande, a funny, delicate, and deeply liberating film about desire, the body, and the right to pleasure at any age.
Nancy Stokes has always led a wise, orderly, almost too well-kept life. A former religion teacher, recently widowed, she discovers that she has spent years missing an essential part of herself: her desire. She has only known one man, her husband, a sexuality without surprise, without momentum, without orgasm. So, one day, she decides to do what she would never have dared to imagine: make an appointment with Léo Grande, a young escort boy as charming as he is considerate.
Good Luck to You, Leo Grande tells less of an erotic adventure than a true reconquest of self. With a lot of humor and infinite modesty, the film questions the sexuality of mature women, bodies that cinema shows too little, desires that are kept silent, pleasures that are believed to be reserved for others. It dismantles complexes, injunctions to eternal youth, and old reflexes of shame with a delightful intelligence.
Emma Thompson is movingly accurate in this role of a woman who learns, late but fully, to inhabit her body. She offers Nancy an immense fragility, but also a luminous strength. As the appointments progress, something unravels: Nancy stands up straighter, breathes better, finally allows herself to exist otherwise than in the eyes of others.
Raw without being vulgar, tender without being mawkish, funny without ever mocking, Good Luck to You, Leo Grande does a world of good. It is a film that talks about sex, yes, but above all about freedom. About the possibility of starting over. About the joy of discovering that it is never too late to desire, to laugh, to look at oneself differently, and to finally get out of one's own limits.
