Inspired by an iconic speech from 2005, this contemporary performance investigates with humor and doubt how you still pass on meaningful life lessons today. How do you lead a meaningful life? That was the core question in the speech that David Foster Wallace gave in 2005 to a group of graduating young people titled ’This is Water’. He did that sweating. You would for less, because how on earth do you give young people advice if you don't know it all yourself anymore? Twenty-two years later, De Nwe Tijd and DE HOE think about that same question: what does that mean, a meaningful life, anno 2027? And how do you pass on to a younger generation what you yourself would describe rather hesitantly as ‘wisdom’? This is water is a generous performance with and about good advice, and about the (im)possibility of following it.
