It will be a timeless musical journey through humanity, comfort, and transcendence. Toen Bach composed the St. Matthew Passion, he created more than a masterpiece for the liturgy. He wrote an impressive musical piece that, almost three centuries later, still has the ability to move generations. It is at the same time a dramatic narrative, a theological mirror game, and an intimate dialogue with every listener. Exactly 300 years after the great master presented the piece to his audience for the first time, it is brought to life again. The first performance took place on April 11, 1727, in Leipzig, during the vesper service on Goede Vrijdag. The composition consisted of two parts: the first part until the arrest of Jesus, the second until his burial. Bach based himself on the Gospel according to Matthew in the Luther translation and wove that with poetic texts by Picander and well-known Lutheran chorales. The result? A composition that is both grand and personal.
