With Met Allerheiligen and Armistice Day, November is the pre-eminent month to reflect on the past. To commemorate what should never have happened, and to celebrate all blissful moments. A deeply personal affair, for which there is no script or standard cultural code. Vaughan Williams, marked by the horrors of the Eerste Wereldoorlog, remembers better times with melancholy. In his music, he seeks a way out of the madness of war through stillness, tenderness, and poetry, in a typically English pastoral sound world. Mozart and Dvořák, on the other hand, are bursting with zest for life and happy memories of home. Mozart in a typically Viennese way with influences from Turkish folk music, Dvořák with a warm nod to his Bohemian roots. Programma Dirigent: Duncan Ward Solist: Alexandra Soumm, violin George Butterworth (1885 - 1916) / A Shropshire Lad (Rhapsody for orchestra) Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (1756 - 1791) / Concerto for violin no. 5 Ralph Vaughan Williams (1872 - 1958) / The Lark Ascending Antonín Dvořák (1841 - 1904) / Symphony no. 8
