Beatriz Villar is one of the most promising voices of the new generation of Portuguese fado singers. With her project Viragem she gives a new, contemporary twist to the centuries-old tradition of the Coimbra fado.
The fado of Coimbra was long considered a man's world: women were mainly listeners and hardly received a place as a singer or musician within this tradition. Beatriz Villar breaks those boundaries with respect for the past and with the gaze of a 21st-century woman: self-aware, refined and free. Coimbra is for her more than a city, it is a musical legacy that she wants to share with a new generation.
Born in Loulé in 1997, Beatriz grew up with theater and music. She studied at the Conservatorium van Coimbra, became the voice of the award-winning group Na Cor do Avesso and is today a singing teacher at the Fadoschool van Coimbra. In 2022 she reached the semi-final of Got Talent Portugal. Her debut album Viragem was nominated for Beste Fadoalbum at the Play Portuguese Music Awards.
