Film; Mama is a portrait

When filmmaker Josefien van Kooten discovers that her mother has Alzheimer's, she decides to capture their changing relationship in image and sound. The result is the documentary Mama is a Portrait: an intimate and visually powerful account of her search for closeness, identity, and saying goodbye, without wanting to truly lose someone. In the film, Josefien lets us into the private world that she and her mother share. A world in which words disappear, memories fade, and roles slowly shift: from daughter to caregiver. Yet, it is precisely in that process that something new emerges – an unexpectedly free, outspoken version of her mother.
