Met Daens made director Stijn Coninx in 1992 one of the most gripping films in Belgian cinema. In this classic, Jan Decleir plays priest Adolf Daens, who in the Aalst of the end of the 19th century stands up for workers and children who have to live in inhumane conditions. Based on the novel Pieter Daens van Louis Paul Boon, the film grew into a great success and was nominated in 1993 for the Oscar for Beste Niet-Engelstalige Film. More than thirty years later, Daens returns to the big screen in a beautifully restored 2K version, which makes the power and topicality of this poignant story palpable again. A timeless plea for social justice, solidarity, and human dignity.
