Ghosts is about an unhappy marriage. Helena Alving does everything she can to keep the truth hidden. Initially, she succeeds. But after the death of her husband, all those nasty secrets—like ghosts—come to light after all. Ghosts is a story about lies, appearances, and hypocrisy. A realistic drama set at a lonely fjord in Norway at the end of the 19th century. Henrik Ibsen (1828–1906) dissects the norms and values of the Norwegian middle class. His most shocking work is probably Ghosts from 1882, a scandalous play at the time, but still frequently performed to this day.
